California Coast: Driving down Highway 1

One of our most anticipated wings of the trip was the two day drive from Portland to San Francisco down Highway 1 off the coast of California. After three weeks of driving, we finally made it to the coast!

We celebrated by taking lots of pitstops at the scenic viewpoints, lunching on fresh clam chowder, rocking out to all the songs with "California" as lyrics, and taking naps on account of too much Dramamine for car sickness (Claire).

nom nom clam chowder
too windy for a good photo but it doesn't matter because we hit the coast!
how Claire spent most of the day

We tried to make it to our campsite on the Oregon/California coast by sunset, but when we realized we wouldn’t quite make it, we instead pulled over on the side of the road to enjoy it in our lawn chairs. Totally worth it.

 Later that night...

Day two was when we actually hit California. We stopped in the Redwoods National Park for some light hiking. The Redwood trees can live for 2,000 years and are known to be prehistoric (although not these specific ones, obviously). They are the most massive trees we've ever seen which led to some beautiful hiking.

Just can't get enough of the ocean
We don't really know what this is, but the saw so many signs for it we just had to stop

Parkour!
Always making a fashion statement
these trees are so big!!

We had perfect weather (thanks California) for the two day drive and although the roads were super windy, we loved every minute of it!

And a tiny bit of our own graffiti
